Energy Field Trip to the Ruhr Region - 9-12 February 2026

Our Master in Global Energy Transition and Governance students took part in an exciting week of visits to Essen and the surrounding Ruhr region of Germany.

First up, they met up with CIFE Alumnus Lukas Bieber at e.on, who shared insights into his work in energy policy and public affairs. In his presentation of the high voltage grid, he explained its key importance for a successful energy transition in Germany and the complex regulations surrounding grid fees.

The students then attended Europe’s leading energy trade fair E-world, which brought together over 1,100 exhibitors representing a wide range of professionals in the energy sector. With 37,000 visitors and participants from 126 countries, it was the place to be and an exciting opportunity for our students to network and speak with potential future employers!

During a visit to IRENA, the group took part in a simulation on how to decide on the electricity mix of a country based on three constraints: how to maintain the reliability of electricity, how to reduce CO2 emissions and how to keep electricity affordable.

The day concluded with a talk at ICLEI to learn how local action in favour of sustainable energy is critical to addressing climate change.

The students also had the opportunity to discover more about Germany's past during a visit to the Haus der Geschichte in Bonn.

Thank you to all those involved for making this such a special week for our Energy students!
