Energy Field Trip to the Ruhr Region

On 19-21 February, the 18 students of the Master in Global Energy Transition and Governance visited Essen and the Ruhr region in order to meet a series of experts in the energy sector and take part in a career fair.

The trip began with a visit to the Ruhr Regional Association with a presentation on the hydrogen ecosystem of the Ruhr region and the regional climate protection strategy. Tim Brömmling, Project Manager for hydrogen coordination, introduced the students to the enormous challenges lying ahead of the region, with an expected rise of the demand for hydrogen up to 25 % of the energy supply in 2028.

The next day at E.ON SE, CIFE Energy Alumnus Lukas Bieber spoke about the regulatory challenges for the development of the gas, electricity and hydrogen infrastructure to achieve Germany's decarbonisation process.

The students also had the opportunity to network during the E-World Energy and Water Fair in Essen, where over 800 exhibitors and potential employers were present. CIFE was also well represented, as several Alumni were there with their companies and associations – they welcomed our students with many good tips.

The visit came to an end in nearby Duisburg at Duisport with an interesting talk on the role of ports in the energy transition process and the hydrogen strategy they are currently implementing. Johannes Eng gave a vivid presentation of Duisport’s efforts to decarbonise its activities, the city of Duisburg offering the most connections to Europe’s extensive rail network.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their experience and expertise with our students!
