Just Published: Europe Forging Resilience

We're pleased to announce the publication of "Europe Forging Resilience", edited by Matthias Waechter, Aline Palige and Laurent Baechler.

"Europe will be forged in crises, and will be the sum of the solutions adopted for those crises," wrote Jean Monnet, one of the Founding Fathers of European integration, in his memoirs. There's no denying that the world is currently facing multiple crises, so much so that the term "polycrisis" has become widely used.

The European Union has rarely faced such major challenges as in recent years. While the solidarity of member states was already being tested by the Covid-19 pandemic, Russia's attack on Ukraine has put common defence at the top of the agenda, all the more so given the increasingly isolationist course of the United States. Populist and Eurosceptic forces are gaining support across member states. At the same time, the EU is aiming to become a globally influential player in mitigating climate change, regulating artificial intelligence and preserving free trade.
It is easy to criticise the EU for its apparent difficulties to steer a clear course in today's rough geopolitical seas. But it is far more worthwhile to analyse in detail what the EU has done and plans to do in order to achieve resilience and coherence in this insecure global context.

"Europe Forging Resilience" was just published in the series "Denkart Europa|Mindset Europe" of the ASKO Europa-Stiftung and the Europäische Akademie Otzenhausen and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft. The volume gathers contributions that examine how the EU is continuously forging resilience in order to meet such challenges.

The title is available online at NOMOS.
